On the most perfect summer day, last September, Gabi and Sean exchanged vows to love each other unconditionally. Its hard to put into my own words, the journey these two have had together, so here is a little something written by the bride, Gabi:
Marrying Sean was the easiest and best decision I’ve made in my life. We’ve created this foundation of being best friends and being each other’s greatest teammate and we wanted our wedding to reflect that. Sean and I have been through a lot together and all of our experiences have shaped us into the people we are today.
Shortly after college, Sean was diagnosed with cancer. When I found out, I knew there was no turning back. I was going to be with him the whole time. Our relationship fast forwarded quite quickly. One day we were recent college graduates adjusting to working full time and the next day Sean was asking me about our possible future and if I wanted kids with him and the preventative measures he would have to take to make that possible. I felt honored and respected that my boyfriend at the time wanted to include me in this decision. I knew he was “the one” from there on. After he had surgery to remove the tumor, his cancer came back two months later. He then had to go through chemotherapy treatments almost every day for three months. During this time, the world really tested us.
Thankfully now, Sean has been clear from cancer for almost four years. We live every day to the fullest always reminding each other that cancer was a part of our story, but it didn’t define us. When it came time to planning our wedding, we wanted our focus to be on a celebration of friendship, love and family. This is what we valued the most both during our hard times. It’s what helped us get through. To bring more meaning into this, we were able to put some personal touches in our wedding that made us and everyone involved happy.
Getting married outdoors was essential since Sean and I love spending time outdoors. My older brother Nick married us, which really made the day incredibly special. I’ve looked up to my older brother my whole life and we knew he would be the perfect person to marry us. The program he put together was so memorable and special. The two readings from our wedding were readings that held significance to us and the family and friends who read them have a special place in our hearts. The ceremony solidified this new union between Sean and me and the new union between our families. We cannot thank Nick enough for the time and effort he put in making our ceremony so special. It’s something we will cherish forever.
Other personal parts of our wedding included my grandmother who painted and custom created the invitation and response cards, while one of Sean’s college roommates made the invitation suite come to life through his graphic design skills. To pay homage to Colombia, the country where my father was born, there was plenty of Spanish music to dance the night away. The Best Man and Matron of Honor speeches made us laugh and cry and our guests could really feel and tell why these two people played important roles in our childhood and adulthood.
There is not a day that goes by where I don’t think about our wedding. It was everything we imagined and more. I feel so incredibly lucky to have met and married my best friend surrounded by our family and friends and to have celebrated the night away with them. The photos and memories from that night are something we will cherish forever.
